Michael Borg — 18 January 2016

Something changes as you pass into the Outback. It’s not always easy to describe or understand but, nonetheless, it’s distinct: the palette, deadpan horizons, the persistent flies and their high-pitched ping, or simply a sense that time and distance can’t be pinned.

Touted as our most accessible by 4WD, the north-west outback of New South Wales covers more than a third of the state – from Bourke, Nyngan, Menindee and Broken Hill; to Milparinka, Tibooburra and the Corner; and Lightening Ridge – welcoming more than 600,000 travellers into the fold every year.

Photojournalist Matt Fehlberg shares his own perceptions passing through southernmost aspect of this spectacular and surprising region.
